September 21, 2005 Jim & Pat Healey, September 21, 2005 Jim & Pat Healey, August 5th, 2005: Playing Glenboro will truly be a sentimental journey for Pat and me. My dad, Russell Healey became an orphan at the age of 5 in Winnipeg in 1902. From 1902 to 1910 he lived on the Leader farm (Hank and Emma Healey Leader) with his uncle Hank and aunt Em. The farm is 8 miles west of Glenboro and is presently owned by Donna Leader Knight (she is the granddaughter of Emma & Hank and daughter of Nelson Leader). My grandparents are buried in Winnipeg, and my greatgrandfather, James Samuel Healey (my namesake), is buried in the Glenboro Cemetery. James Samuel homesteaded in the Glenboro area in the early 1890s. In 1910 my dad moved to Iowa to live with an uncle. He went to college in the States and eventually became an American citizen. He eventually moved to Michigan, and consequently I was born an American.. Anyway, we are looking forward to our day at Glenboro. We played there 9 years ago at a Leader reunion and really enjoyed the course. We will be staying with Donna Knight for our 2 nights in Glenboro. We will arrive there on Tuesday, 9-20-05 and play on Wednesday. I have asked another cousin of mine (Bob Jewsbury who lives in Glenboro) to play with us. We will stay with Donna on Wed. night and drive to Estevan, Sask where we will stay with another 2nd cousin for 2 nights as we play Saskatchewan and North Dakota. Before 9 years ago we didn’t know any of my Canadian relatives, and now we are staying with them all the way across Canada. Our web site will be activated on August 15th, so you can
watch our progress prior to arriving at Glenboro. http://www.handi.com/JimPatCanAmAthon/ Best regards, Jim and Pat Healey Jim & Pat Healey’s introduction, August 4, 2005: We are a retired senior couple (ages 74 & 72) attempting to do something in golf that has, to our knowledge, never been attempted or done. We plan to play 18 holes of golf in all 50 US states, Washington D.C. , and all 10 Canadian provinces (total 61) in 61 days. Presently we play 18 holes four or five times a week (walking), but 18 holes for 61 straight days is a tall order. We’ll have to be lucky as well as durable. Bad weather as well as illness could put us off schedule. At any rate, we are determined to proceed starting August 20, 2005 in Anchorage, Alaska. (The chart below outlines the courses they intend to play.) Should we be successful in our endeavor, there is a good chance that it will qualify for the Guinness Book of World Records. According to Guinness, we must complete the trip in an unprecedented time (actually, it has never been done in all the states and provinces). Also, we must have signed documentation that we actually played the course (golf professional, owner, manager, etc.) We must also keep a comprehensive journal of the complete trip with names and locations of the golf courses played. Your course, Glenboro Golf Course, seems to be our best option for Manitoba. (September 21, 10:30 am) We also plan to have a website which we’ll be updating daily with information on the course we played that day, pictures, etc. (TBA) Jim & Pat Healey
